The Retention Metrics Every ISP Should Track
Churn rate tells you what already happened. These are the leading indicators that tell you what is about to happen — and where to act.

Introduction
Monthly churn is the number every ISP reports, but it is a rear-view mirror. To improve it, you need metrics that move earlier and that your teams can actually influence.
Leading Indicators
- Repeat contact rate. The share of subscribers who contact support again about the same issue within a short window. It is one of the clearest signals of unresolved problems.
- First-contact resolution. How often an issue is fixed in a single interaction, whether by a person or an AI agent.
- Time to resolution. Measured from the first sign of a problem — ideally from telemetry, not from the first call.
- Truck-roll rate. Technician visits are expensive and slow. A falling rate usually means more issues are being solved remotely.
- Customer satisfaction after contact. A short survey after an interaction shows whether the experience helped or hurt the relationship.
Connecting Metrics to Action
Metrics only matter if they change what teams do. Tie each indicator to an owner and a lever: repeat contacts to diagnostic quality, resolution time to automation coverage, satisfaction to escalation rules. Review them weekly, not quarterly.
Final Thoughts
Retention improves when support quality and network health are managed as one system. Track the indicators that move first, act on them early, and churn will follow.
